Joy Division were a British Post-Punk band formed in 1976 and disbanded in 1980 with the death of lead vocalist Ian Curtis. The remainder of the band went on to perform as New Order. Joy Division would have an enormous influence on the alternative and post-punk music of the 80s as well as the post-punk revival bands of the 00′s. The band are also said to of been the first Gothic Rock as the influenced many of the so called goth bands such as Bauhaus and The Cure (however I view goth rock as never existing as few people labeled Joy Division as goth and their sound was the same as Bauhaus).

Bauhaus were touted …
Bauhaus were touted as similar to JD which I didn’t agree with… a mate of mine was a roadie for JD – he was a little bit off when IC topped himself… anyhoo – Platty the Roadie would’ve said, “Goth, aw thucks…” no front teeth…

Goth as not …
Goth as not existing? That makes me sad. While Bauhaus is heralded as one of the first “Goth” bands, they weren’t quite up to the Sisters of Mercy’s or Lords of the New Church progression into the whole Goth sound, but the whole Goth sound was all very much influenced by Joy Division, although Joy Division has a bit of a more distinct still-Sex-Pistoled sound in most of their tracks than Bauhaus. Joy Division and The Cure, however, I wouldn’t attempt to call Goth by any means.
