If you want to go really old school, then give Peter Murphy a try. He was one of the biggest influences on Gothic rock. Alien Sex Fiend and 45 Grave are also older. The Cure and The Cramps are great, too.

i have a friend who used to listen to stuff like that and when she changed her taste she started listening to stuff like xiu xiu, wolf parade, sunset rubdown, this song is a mess but so am i, frog eyes, and a lot of noise music. e-mail me if you wanna know about more weird music.

I'm not familiar with any of those bands, the only goth band I can think of is Birthday Massacre, it's a chick singer, she's really good. I saw them live in San Francisco a while ago. Hope you like them, I'd suggest Happy Birthday and Blue as the first songs you listen to. =)
