Is industrial, EBM, and Synth Rock part of the Goth subculture? WTF!?

Regarding to the question above. I expected symphonic metal, deathcore and black metal but what I found in certain communities online are Industrial, EBM and synth rock bands. They even ripped off the ‘dark’ look – and call themselves CyberGoth? (e.g Zeromancer, The Birthday Massacre). It’s just….I thought those are in separate worlds.
What, exactly, is happening here? Is this just like the early 00′s where Emos consider themselves ‘punk’? Encroachment or genre fusion?
I listen to 16volt, Rob Zombie and KMFDM and some people call it ‘Darkwave’ or ‘Cybergoth’. This irks me.

EDIT: Crass138, try going to Vampirefreaks.com (a goth social networking site). They even listed Nine Inch Nails as one of the bands
EDIT: migh, I kinda agree with you about the european thing….here at my part of the world, the word ‘gothic’ immediately conjures up symphonic death metal, Nightwish, and Immortal to mind. The goth community I saw was based on US. Maybe that is the case…?

i’m not sure what you mean… i’ve been going to ‘Goth’ nights/clubs for about 10 years and still do… and i have never heard symphonic metal, deathcore or black metal at any night i’ve been! Industrial and EBM yes definitely… in fact nights often tend to be billed ‘Gothic/Industrial/EBM, Post-Punk’ along with other tags i.e. ‘Bat Cave’, Future Pop, Darkwave, Death/Gothic Rock, Synthpop, ‘Gothic Metal’ (could be ‘symphonic metal’ i suppose…) amongst others… it’s been like that as far as i can remember! (maybe ‘Future Pop’ is a relatively new term… for me it simply means ” those crappy poppy techno-y tunes they occasionally slip into the mix lol”
…
as far as any forms of ‘Metal’… the heaviest i’ve ever heard at these nights has been stuff like Rammstein, Ministry, Nightwish, Paradise Lost or yes… NIN… but it mainly tends to be the genres i mention above.
i’d say very generally Goth clubs tend to play ‘Dark Alternative/Alternative Dance’ music… which does NOT include most forms of ‘Metal’ (definitely not Deathcore and Black Metal!)

Industrial, EBM, and Synthrock are not part of goth music, although symphonic metal, deathcore and black metal are even farther away from the subculture in my opinion. Honestly, I’m kind of an elitist and only consider true goth music stuff like old-school classic goth bands like Bauhaus and Siouxsie and the Banshees, batcave like Specimen and Alien Sex Fiend, older deathrock like Christian Death and 45 Grave, newer deathrock like Frank the Baptist and Cinema Strange, and so on with other music in a similar vein to all that stuff. Although Industrial and EBM and so on gets played in so-called “goth” clubs, I don’t consider it a part of the goth subculture at all. There just happens to be a lot of crossover with the people who like that stuff. Like me for example. I love goth music, but I also like industrial and synth rock and that kind of stuff quite a bit too, but I don’t consider it goth in any form, as it is its own thing.
And with the genres you mentioned, I don’t even consider any crossover with the real goth subculture with them. While a goth can listen to symphonic metal, deathcore (which I don’t even know what that is), or black metal in addition to real goth music, it’s the real goth music that’s going to make them goth, not the other stuff. And I haven’t met many people into both real goth music and then stuff that’s metal-based (and thus not actually related to goth music at all, as goth is related to punk and post-punk, not metal), at least not on equal levels. Usually there’s going to be a bias towards one or the other.
