(Goths) Why do some of you hate Metal?
filed in Darkwave Death Metal on May.26, 2010
I hear so many people tell me you can’t be a goth if you listen to metal. I know Gothic Metal isn’t Goth but I really do listen to real Gothic music. Post punk, Ethereal Wave, Darkwave, Neoclassical, Death rock, is Goth not industrial not metal. Calling Gothic Metal ((Goth)) is the exact same thing as calling industrial metal ((industrial)) Right? Thanks

They’re scared of us because metalheads can actually play guitar properly.

It’s not that we necessarily hate metal (back in my younger days, I listened to metal, and even now if it’s intelligent metal I don’t mind it so much), we just hate that metal is grouped in with goth music when each type of music has very different origins and are not related, and then the general public has a misconception of what goth music and what the subculture really are. And it’s not that goths can’t listen to metal, they can, but it can’t be metal in place of goth, because someone can’t really be goth without listening to goth music. If metal is in addition to goth music, then yeah, I see no problem with a goth listening to it and claiming they’re goth. And to some extent calling gothic metal “goth” is similar to calling industrial metal “industrial”, but not quite. The difference I’d say though is gothic metal is using the term “gothic” as an adjective and not actually taking anything from real goth music, while industrial metal is metal that uses industrial elements. But yes, calling industrial metal “industrial” is as bad as calling gothic metal “goth”, because they’re both inaccurate descriptions.
