Well, gothic metal is not gothic, just a type of metal, and very few goths listen to it. Most old school goths I know will say that anything recent (as in, the last twenty years) has already been done, and was done better by those back in the 80s. They have a point. The post punk gothic music was the basis for everything else, and I don’t know any adult goth who doesn’t like Siousxie, Bauhaus, etc.

Goth is goth. If im correct Goth originated from punk late in the 80′s. Im a goth myself and im into the 80′s though some people tell me its not goth. Enjoy what your into and don’t listen to others opinions.

I’m one of those elitist goths that associates goth with post-punk and punk. The reason goth isn’t those other genres you mentioned is because they aren’t related to the origin of what goth music really is. You can’t just take an established music genre and subculture and then decide, oh, this other music genre is also part of that subculture. You’re changing what goth is if you do that. I’m not saying goth music doesn’t evolve, it definitely does and there are plenty of new goth/deathrock bands to demonstrate that. But those bands at least have some influence of the original goth bands. If you take “gothic” metal for example, it has nothing to do with the original goth sound and the gothic in the title is not related to the goth subculture, but rather being used as an adjective. And I’m not saying a real goth can’t listen to those other genres either. I listen to plenty of non-goth genres myself (industrial, futurepop, EBM, synthpop, horrorpunk, psychobilly, etc). But to be a real goth, I do think you need to like at least some of the early goth bands or newer bands influenced by older goth acts. No point in calling yourself goth if you’re not associating yourself with what the subculture sprung from and is/was at its purest roots.

What?
I don’t think you really have any clue what goth is because you sound like an angry kid who is into metal music and those ugly Tripp pants. And that’s not goth at all.
