Looking for punk, goth and industrial clubs, stores, and partys here in Memphis. Staying here for a week and just looking to get into the scene. Also looking for some really good all night coffee shops (NOT Starbucks!!!)
In Memphis, it is best to just stay indoors and probably never leave the house. Sorry. Bad place.

best modes/scales for dark sounding metal?
October 23rd, 2008
what would be the recommended scales and/or modes to use if you wanted to get a really dark and evil sound out of your music.Like that of a horror movie or bands like Opeth, Nevermore and Dimmu Borgir? no need to tab any scales out, just tell me the names and i'll look them up
2 days and not 1 answer? you guys suck
I'll give this one a go cuz I used to play in a slayer cover band.
The diminished scale sounds really heavy when used in riffs. The main use would be changing between the root note and the flattened 5th. This creates a dark sound which is very popular in metal.
D diminished scale:
D, E, F, G, G#, A#, B, C#, D
Another really good one is the harmonic minor scale.
A harmonic minor:
A, B, C, D, E, F, G#, A
Hope these help!

Where can I find the type of dark classical/opera music that influences Norwegian Black Metal?
October 23rd, 2008
I'm searching for sort of a powerful epic battle feel, similar to those that influence Norwegian Black Metal bands like Dimmu Borgir, etc. Probably a pretty far out question for a general "rock" category, but I have no idea where to start.
Start with Wagner and Stravinsky

Has anyone heard this Los Angeles, California Punk/No Wave (not new wave) band & if so what’s your favorite songs?
TV Toy sounds really familiar. Now I'm gonna be trying to remember where I heard them from before from.
I've never heard of them but they were pretty good.
A similar (kinda) band is TV Toy:

I'm looking for a new wave band from the 80s. See additional details for a bit better description.?
October 23rd, 2008
This will take a miracle to solve I think. I had a girlfriend back in the 80s who had a home recorded tape labeled "New Wave". There was some music on there I really liked at the time. It was kind of dark and dreary. Unfortunately, it was so long ago that I don't remember much about it, except one of the songs had the word "carpetbag". Can anyone out there help me?
The only song during the 80s that I know, with the word carpetbag, was Modern Talking : You can win if you want.
Who else on here loves Duran Duran and all that new wave 80's Music?
October 23rd, 2008
The Cure, New Order, Depeche Mode, The Smiths…
I do. Today's kids don't know anything about originality, talent and real bands! Some of these acts had and are still out there today with the talent and innovative and cool music they put out. They put out some of the best songs! I love Depeche Mode and New Order and Bjork too. Those were the days!
Will a Bose Wave Music system purchased from USA work in the UK especially the radio (FM) ?
October 23rd, 2008
I already have a transformer to convert the voltage. My wife is in the USA on a visit and the Bose Wave music system there is nearly half price (500 dollars vs. 450 pounds here) . My only concern is that will I be able to pick up UK FM radio signals ? The sales guy in the USA bose store was saying the USA bose radio only tunes into odd channel numbers.. i.e. 98.7 …or 105.9… etc.. where as in UK there are even numbered stations. eg. 98.5… 106.2… etc… So will it work here..? Surely the user must be able to manually tune into any FM frequency he / she chooses ? . any help much appreciated. Rgds.
This is a great question. The sales guy was right. It won't tune properly because the UK standard of tuning goes in even increments and the US standard goes in odd increments. For example, UK- 98.2, 98.4, 98.6 American- 98.1, 98.3, 98.5
Some high end tuners allow you to tune both odd and even, but the Bose wave radio most definitely is NOT high end. I would never spend $500 for a clock radio. You can do much better for much less.
