Why do you think New Wave bands from the 80s never reached longevity?

Bands like Tears for Fears?
Was it because if the way record companies were then?
Because their electronic/keyboard heavy music didn’t translate well live?
Because the music wasn’t very danceable? Too heady? Too serious?
Anyway, these bands still live on stations like http://www.631Radio.com …
but it seems that music died as fast as Atari did then.

Probably because management wasn’t sophisticated so they fizzled out. But I would agree to disagree in alot of respects. Some bands like Depeche Mode really endured and I remember them like yesterday. Better than this decades output.
Btw – The reason Flock of Seagulls didn’t change is because they had a hardcore of fans who liked them the way they were and that was the whole reason for their popularity. Some bands do well to evolve others don’t.

They were a fad.

It’s because the music sucked and they were all freaks. I hate 80′s music with a passion. It really is bad.

Stubbornness? Many of them seemed unwilling to change anything about their images. Flock of Seagulls come to mind.

I still have my sister’s Atari. I’m only 22, but damn am I glad I missed that era of music. It sucked. Except for Prince. And Metallica.

the aftermath of all the cocaine induced psychosis in the 70s had wore off by the late 80s and simply left them all in a state of alzheimer’s.
they couldnt remember the lyrics?

the 80′s were not good to a lot of people….most of those bands sucked. with the advent of mtv a lot of music became about the look and not the talent. the music beame a marketing tool to sell the look. the bands sucked, but they looked good on tv…run down to hot topic and get your uniform.
of course, there were exceptions, but those were few and far between.
i bet you never saw a hendrix show brought to you by michelob, and i never heard of him being part of the toyota concert series.
