I watched New Wave become a defined genre of music. It was clearly not Rock(i.e. Pink Floyd) and not Pop(i.e. Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder). It was something “new” mostly from Britain.

Someone decided “Alternative” or “Grunge” was the name to use and “New Wave” fell out of favor. Now we are using the term “Indie” bands.

Who determines a new name for a genre of music should be created? Is it just clever marketing ploy meant to separate one gen from another? Is it the American music industry competing with the British?
(BTW, there are still a number bands once called “new wave” still around such as U2).

Who decides the classifications?
Can anyone point me to articles on this subject? That would be an instant 10 points.
