Could you name some influential 80′s new wave bands?

I like the genre of music but I’m having a hard time finding some good bands.

Police, Boomtown Rats, Duran Duran, Adam and the Ants, XTC, Early Elvis Costello (pre country album), Blondie, Bronski Beat, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, The Communards, Bananarama, The Smiths, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, etc
The trouble with ‘new wave’ it was never really truly defined, ‘new wave’ was a term coined by the press to describe the bands above while their actual music ‘styles’ varied greatly.
I suggest you go to your local cd store, check the cheap bins and ‘various artist’ racks there’s always plenty of 80′s compilations on sale (a few dollars) and it’s a cheapo and easy way of finding music you like

Depeche Mode
Echo and the Bunnymen
Berlin
Romeo Void
Erasure
Siouxie and the Banshees
Joy Division
INXS
Duran Duran
I think new wave was kind of a loose description of music that could be broken into several categories, but these are great 80′s bands nonetheless.

Again, got to agree with the two previous posts – you’re talking about a genre which incorporates quite a lot of different styles under its name, applied in much the same way ‘Indie’ is these days.
Some more bands to help you along:
DEVO,
New Order,
The Fall,
Kate Bush,
A Flock of Seagulls,
Prefab Sprout,
Ultravox,
Cabaret Voltaire,
A Certain Ratio,
Depeche Mode,
The Human League,
Spandeau Ballet,
Orchestral Maneouvres in the Dark [OMD].

I could list a lot of bands here because I love 80′s rock but I’ll just tell you how I found them.
I usually find new bands (bands that i don’t know of … they can be old as well) with Yahoo! Launch Cast Radio (yahoo messenger plug-in) … It’s easy: you chose a station and they give all sorts of artists. For 80′s music here we go: you can see the ”All Stations” (after you activated the plug-in) and you click on it and then you have “Genres” and “Locations” and you click on “genres” and then you’ll see a list and you could look at “Decades/Hits” and you’ll be able to chose from a large variety of genres & co. and then all you have to do is listen. As simple as that! :]
Hope this helped!
EDIT: sorry about the metal part … I answered another question and it was about metal bands so I just copied and pasted and changed it a bit but forgot about the metal part
